Design Thinking - What moves forward businesses?

What moves forward businesses? Advertising campaigns? The world?

IDEAS

‘idea’ is understood as a basic element of thought that can be either visual, concrete or abstract.

Again, this is a process where we would like to reintroduce the concept of "design thinking"

Designers keep a sketchbook of ideas where they scribble ideas, visuals, paste newspaper clippings. Collect your ideas regarding your business in such a notebook. Keep memo pads around you, in all rooms, and write down ideas regarding your business as soon as they pop in your mind. Gather them in the book and review them.

This will have 2 main benefits.

1. you will be less stressed as your mind won't have to keep the load
2. your business will have a rich resource of ideas and inspiration

Bring the book with you as you discuss with a marketing consultant or advertising agency. This will bring greater understanding.

We are a West Yorkshire based agency specialised in marketing, creative and digital services.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GREAT CREATIVE

Great creative ads have one thing in common. They sell products, services, ideas or lifestyles. If they don’t do this directly, they are memorable enough to influence a consumer at the time he or she makes a purchase.

• No one cares about your company - Your ad has to give them a reason to care
• If your ad doesn’t convince you, chances are it won’t convince your audience.
• Talk about one thing – one benefit only
• Say it differently.
• Make picture and words work together.
• The worst thing an ad can do is be boring.
• Sell something, don’t just talk.
• Make them respond.

Assesment of online digital projects

Understanding the process of building a digital project, any project, be it a blog, a full web PR camapign, a website, email campaign is the keystone of success. Why?
A friend in the industry was saying to me the other day: "With print projects, once you sent them to the client, the job is finished. With the digital I expect to go bed at night and in the morning discover something essential just changed!"

It is true, technologies change so fast, and with them behaviours change. Of software, of people.

We underline the importance of achieving clarity before starting any project!

Steps.
1. Assesment. Asses where your business is at this point in time. Decide if online marketing is usefull.

2. What is needed? Define what are your objectives.

3. Identifying marketing needs. How is marketing going to help achieve your objectives.

4. Choosing how and where.
With the help of an agency or a consultant choose which online marketing tools are best suited for the task

Effective campaigns

Brand equity, quality visuals, effective marketing and sales materials, website, data collection, direct mailing and emailing campaigns, web PR with dozen and dozen of options: blogging, twittering, networking, connecting ...it is a maze. How do you reach that amazing customer? In our previous post we pointed the four stages:

  • Analysis
  • Planning
  • Implementation
  • Control
These are the four pillars of effective campaigns. Have a strategy in place. Effective campaigns equal good ROI. Effective strategy equals wise use of your budget.

THE WORLD HAS CHANGED

The world has changed. Obviously it is the credit crunch crisis that shook the world. But there are already signs of stabilisation. Here, in West Yorkshire, we are noticing more "SOLD" signs in front of properties. During the last six months, the estate agencies kept the "for sale" signs out there. Obvious - you are going to say. Yet, nobody was buying.

Do you have the "for sale" signs for your services and products?

You are going to say: it is more complicated than this in my case. My product is specialised, my targets are more niche, and now, people are more cautious when purchasing...

It is true. Though, even before the recession, people tended to have more informed choices, due to the broadband facilities and the wealth of information the internet brought. Yes, you have a website, and it did brought you a few leads and sales in the beggining. But now competition is present too on the internet. Even websites that have little or nothing to do with your keywords show up in searches. The internet is full of debris floating between you and your potential customers.

Now ask yourself one simple question, is it faster to run on one leg- your website- or use both legs- website and social media tools?

Don't you know where to start? Have you tried and didn't see significant results? If so, you have to step back and re-asses: did you have a strategy or you just threw things out to see if they stick?

Don't Take Your Foot off the Gas - marketing secrets for time of crisis

Sure few want to remember the long days and sleepless nights last November and December while you were doing everything possible to push business forward whilst everything around seemed to grind to a halt?

But it is no time for a vacation. You might be tired, or discouraged after long months of efforts, but the best vacantion you can take is to keep your chin up and continue marketing to your customers.

Reduce your marketing efforts and you'll lose precious momentum and you'll have to make up in the long run.

Marketing:
  • keeps you in front of customers
  • brings prospects and leads
  • positions you well for when the economy recovers

A reduction in marketing efforts is not an option. Marketing keeps you in front of current customers, enlightens prospects, and positions you well for when the economy recovers. Those who stop marketing often find themselves losing precious momentum and having to make up ground in the long run.

People buy from people they know - marketing secrets for crisis

That's it. That is the secret of success. Provided with the oportunity to meet as many people as possible, whilst improving your knowledge and skillset is an invaluable tool to grow your business and one that can explode business' revenue and profits.

And that is what we are all looking at right now. Some of the people (businesses) who knew you can't afford to buy for a while. So you're looking at new leads. But how do you build relationships with them?

It takes time and effort. Time isn't something that you think you can afford. For example the time to keep a blog up-to-date. The time to think offers, and the time to follow the results, the time to tweek them based on results ... Time, time, time. Time costs money.

But. A blog kept up-to-date can tell the story that you tell every time you network. And, it does tell it again and again. You put the time once, but the blog does the work of presenting yourself again and again...

Hm... this got you thinking. But you still have to go networking, manage your business. You think you certainly can afford the time to put together these tools that will help you.

At iPerception we believe that marketing isn't marketing if it does not bring returns.

Marketing 2.0

Even if we know it or not, the web has changed into its new form, web 2.0. It was and still is a buzz word - but what is web 2.0? In plain english, one can do more ove rthe internet, connect with people and organisations, share and/or amass content, make safer transactions faster and safer.

A few years ago more than the odd business owner would say: "Website? What??? Come on, get serious!!!" Today websites are part of must-haves.

But already the medium evolved. There are talks about the demise of the website. Now the same business owner would say: "Facebook?? What? My internet service provider warned me about breaches of security this one brings. My employees are blocked if they want to access it!!!"

Now building a website can be easy. The question is are you building it properly?

And also, are you aware that people now look for more than your website to check references about your company and products/services?

Marketing 2.0 is a natural consequence of Web 2.0 as it refers to the transformation of marketing resulting from the network effect of the Internet.

Marketing 2.0 represents a dramatic shift in marketing to account for customers researching and buying goods and services independent of advertising and marketing campaigns and messages.

WORDS AND PICTURES

Contemporary creative advertising has largely abandoned long copy advertisments and many campaigns rely almost solely on the power of impactful visuals. But how to translate this into the digital world where "content is king"?

This is an example of how we used words and pictures. Together. (click on the image to see it in context)

Words and pictures in perfect balance - is the secret of effective advertising and campaigns. Memorable straplines are passed on, while the perfect image makes the message memorable.

IDEA GENERATION

What moves forward businesses? Advertising campaigns? The world?

IDEAS

‘idea’ is understood as a basic element of thought that can be either visual, concrete or abstract.

Again, this is a process where we would like to reintroduce the concept of "design thinking"

Designers keep a sketchbook of ideas where they scribble ideas, visuals, paste newspaper clippings. Collect your ideas regarding your business in such a notebook. This will have 2 main benefits.

Bring the book with you as you discuss with a marketing consultant or advertising agency. This will bring greater understanding.

TO GOOGLE OR NOT TO GOOGLE? (in search of creativity)

Where to look for inspiration? We've seen so many designs that look just like the next one. Some are trends, and it helps keeping with them or setting them.

So, on either side - client or designer - should we google for inspiration?

Definetely, we should be looking for inspiration!!!

Sources might be magazines, books, encyclopedias, a walk around, objects surrounding you, and yes, the internet.

And first thing that we do, we "google"

Though there are several new search engines emerging. Microsoft is launching BING -
which "will distinguish itself from Google and Yahoo by focusing on delivering answers, not just search results showing potentially relevant links.

Another recent launch, Topsy, searches Twitter and divines real-time trends from the site's 140-character posts." (source: The Wall Street Journal)

Today, do something different.

THE WOW FACTOR

We all love the "wow" factor. Certainly, in advertising, the wow is more of a requirement and we all like to see creative ideas like this one

But you have a fantastic offer, do not have a couple of tall buildings at hand, and, for sure, you have a very specific target. You do not to shoot blindly at the market...

According to Wikipedia, "Creativity is a mental and social process involving the generation of new ideas or concepts, or new associations of the creative mind between existing ideas or concepts. Creativity is fueled by the process of either conscious or unconscious insight. An alternative conception of creativeness is that it is simply the act of making something new.

From a scientific point of view, the products of creative thought (sometimes referred to as divergent thought) are usually considered to have both originality and appropriateness."

This is where your agency's creativity is tested - finding the right solution, and deliver a work of elegance and clarity.

Email marketing has more "do-not" rules than any other media. Yet, the movement, the elegance and the wow factor can be delivered. See the example we produced for an Aston Martin offer.

ORGANIC SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION

Metatags, page descriptions, keywords, text and alternative text for images will take roughly a week to implement, including the manual registering with search engines. Once that is done it takes roughly one month to get registered in the search engines (it’s their acceptance – each submission is overviewed by a human operator and approved) and from 3-6 months for the website to rank higher and higher.
Database engine outputs flat information on the used cars pages, which means it’s searchable. Also all the other content introduced via Content Management System. The search engine optimization process is one of finely tuning elements of the website every month, paying attention of the links uploaded, having alternative text description for images, writing the text in such a way that it helps the ranking.

Digital Projects

  • WEB SITE DESIGN AND BUILD PROJECTS
  • DIGITAL MARKETING PROJECTS
  • EMAIL MARKETING
Options include: EMAIL CREATIVE, CODING, BROADCAST;
EMAIL CODING, BROADCAST; EMAIL BROADCAST ONLY.
  • EMAIL: DIGITAL STATIONERY
  • GOOGLE ADWORDS AND PPC

What do you need before starting a digital project?

First of all the understanding that the digital does not work outside physical world rules. Think of the digital as a part of your marketing mix. See beyond statistics and analyse them from this point of view. We will now place a simple bulleted list for you to follow before starting to define website structure and tools:
  • The need to "broadcast" on regular basis
  • The blueprint of:

•the marketing solution mix complete with

•the tools

  • First of all there is need of setting a

UNIQUE SELLING PROPOSITION (do set up a meeting with a marketing consultant or agency, even if you are knowledgeable of marketing. The objective distance of someone not involved in the project personally is healthy.)

  • Communicating the UNIQUE SELLING PROPOSITION. We are reminding you about the basics of marketing, as we have seen it so many times, how, under the pressure of endless to do lists, the planning phase is almost completely overlooked, and there is a tendency to jump into "Lt's do this, and that!"

In the end of the day, the web is all about communication. All the tools and widgets are designed to serve communication.

Digital projects are complex, and they can turn into a pitfall if there are no objectives. Keep your eyes on them and you will avoid the endless to-and-fro between your marketing department and your agency, saving time and money. And your agency will love you!

Email broadcasting

The broadcasting service is sending the email campaign to your email list using a secure server, and we are a trusted broadcasting agency, which guarantees that your campaign will reach its target without being cast out as spam.

In a previous post we covered the "good, bad and ugly" of broadcasting.

As we have advised on using an agency that has the skills and understanding of media across offline-online, we are recommending again to use an agency that is exeprienced in broadcasting because the time you put in trying to do it in-house is not the only downfall. Email broadcasting is a domain of activity in its own right due to the pitfalls hidden in the diversity of email clients behaviour, which can lead to a defectuos receving, or not not receiving at all of your emails.

Drop us a line at mark.griffin@iperception.co.uk and we will advise you

EMAIL CODING

If you’ve already had creative work produced for another medium and require conversion for email no worries, send a copy of the pdf of the layout and we'll produce the coding and optimization for all known email client platforms and broadcast it to your list of emails.

WEB SITE DESIGN AND BUILD PROJECTS

It’s like this: The best car manufacturers combine technical engineering and design skills to achieve a beautiful and reliable product. The best of both worlds. A car enthusiast can purchase a vehicle, ‘pimp it’ and make it look great but unfortunately the engine is shot and performance is disappointing. Finding a car with a great engine but dilapidated bodywork leaves the owner with a reliable car that looks poor. We strive to combine our technical engineering and design skills in the construction of each project to achieve a beautiful and reliable product that is fit for purpose.

It's all about understanding

CLARITY: When we receive a quotation request or agree a contract for digital support services our objective is to achieve clarity: clarity of purpose, clarity of expectation. Simply put, we need to understand what you wish to achieve in order to deliver it in the most efficient manner. If appropriate well challenge your assumptions and offer alternatives. We promise not to embark on a project if we consider it to be flawed or lacking clarity.

Whether you are requesting a quotation for your first web site, considering replacing an existing site or require other digital marketing services - email campaigns, viral marketing, PR on the web etc. - well offer informed and understandable support and advice.

Digital Marketing in 2009

There are intense talks and opinions regarding the digital media and its use in marketing in 2009. Most of them converge to the common idea that the combination between the economy's status and the emerging of new technologies that allow increased interacivity and participation of customers will show an increase in the use of digital marketing.

On 10 Digital Trends to Observe in 2009 we can see just what is in store for marketers. With such a vast array of new technologies one can ask "Should I use a 'digital agency'?"
There was an era of high specialism in marketing, where design was more about aestethics and less about business. Design Council is promoting a way of designing that goes beyond visual into design thinking - a process of designing both processes and products.

From our experience with our clients and within the agency we can answer to this: whilst the digital world requires for certain a huge amount of skills and mastering of the suppliers, design thinking is crucial in the process. Shop around for the agencies that took the effort of incorporating both fields in their processes.

Be it either a traditional advertising and marketing agency that incorporated the digital, or a digital agency that understands the marketing side - these companies took an effort to evolve for the wellbeing of your business.

Broadcasting email to multiple email addresses cost effectively

So you've decided, possibly, maybe to produce an email campaign aimed at new, existing
or lapsed prospects with the objective of keeping in touch, making a sale and so on. This campaign will be aimed at multiple email addresses and will not be a text only mailing,
it will include graphics and links to your website. That way your email and web campaigns
work together to deliver the message resulting in more hits to your website, helping to
move it up the rankings and reducing (over time) your need for pay per click campaigns etc.
We've tried every method possible over the last few years, learning as we go and recommend the following.

About commercial email

What is commercial email? Let's define it as an email delivered to a contact from an organisation aimed at achieving a positive response over time which is sent to multiple email contacts and consists of words and pictures.

A look at my inbox recently confirms the exponential increase in commercial email (I've got a 30 a day habit, what about you?)

In principal email marketing should be easy and cost effective but is it?

As with any marketing project ask yourself the following questions before you begin:

1) What am I seeking to achieve from the email campaign?
2) Who in my organisation has the time and skills to produce the campaign?
(is it their main job or another task added to an already busy day)
3) When does the campaign need to be completed?
Will you be able to do the same thing (if required) in a months time?
4) How will you know if it has been a success?
5) What are the alternatives?

What you need to be able to do:

1) The skills to write the content and find appropriate imagery
2) The technical expertise to construct the email campaign
3) The technical expertise to deliver the campaign

Why does ISP block blind copy emails to multiple recipients

Technical issue: Blind copy emails to multiple recipients (over 20 dependent on Internet Service Provider (ISP) settings). Why does my ISP block them?

Scenario: So you or one of your members of staff - sales, customer service, accounts etc tries to send an email to a small number (under 100) of existing customers using html template or plain text email. You don't want to show the entire email list for data protection and confidentiality reasons. Therefore you utilise the blind copy email 'cheat' method as follows: To and from fields include your own email address and you import the email addresses into the blind copy field and send, If you do this with up to 20 addresses (approx.) no problem but then you get a message from your ISP saying that your messages cannot be delivered, Why?

Answer
The delivery of your e-mails is managed by the ISP (Internet Service Provider). So that they deliver emails as efficiently as possible they do not allow the sending of multiple emails to a number of email addresses (the quantity varies depending on your ISP, but can be as small as 20 addresses in some cases.) Contacting the ISP to request a higher limit is the solution, as each of them have different policies, and possibly different tariffs.

Issues
While you can send the email to yourself, and include the other emails in the Bcc field, it will mean that everyone else will get an email addressed to you and not them.

If you can only send twenty at a time and have 100 plus to send it is time consuming and
can end being more of a pain than it's worth (we've done it!)

Solutions
Through iPerception digital we have an online solution which makes it cost effective to broadcast multiple emails. Contact: mark.griffin@iperception.co.uk for further details.
